Reagan's Crazy Rash

On Tuesday, I got a call from Mother's Day Out that Reagan had awoken from her nap with a strange rash on her legs (1:50pm). She had a quarter-sized spot on each thigh just above her knees. It was raised and pink in the middle and red around the edges. By the time I made it up there to pick her up about 10 minutes later another spot had popped up on one of her lower legs. It didn't seem to bother her at all - she wasn't scratching or rubbing it. I called Jason and we decided to get her to the pediatrician ASAP. I called and they had a cancellation, so we headed straight there from MDO. When we got there (2:20pm), I checked the rash again, and it was growing pretty quickly. By the time we made it back into a room (3:00pm) it was covering her thighs from hip to mid knee and was starting to wrap around the thigh. The nurses were intriqued, they were calling more nurses in to look at it. They'd never seen anything like it. The doctor was the same. He said it didn't really fit into any of the normal rash categories - it was growing too fast, didn't itch or bother her at all, had strange borders, etc. He had another doc come in to check it out too, and she said the same thing. He ended up pulling out a dermatology book and looking through to find something that seemed to fit. He found one that came close, but it basically just said that they don't know what causes it and it can last up to 2 weeks. He said to come back if it got worse or started bothering her.

Jason went to med school with a guy who is a derm resident here, so he gave Tom a call. We took the pics below (about 5pm - it was covering one leg hip to ankle at this point) and emailed them to him for his opinion. Just describing it, no one quite grasps how large it really is. Tom called back and his first response was, "Whoa! I didn't think it was going to be that big." He said too, that it didn't follow any normal patterns for a rash, but that he would guess it to be an allergic reaction.

So, all in all, no one really knows what it was. It was just this crazy rash that didn't phase Reagan in the slightest but had us a little concerned. By the time we put her to bed that night, it had wrapped around her leg and grown together in the back but was fading significantly. However, another spot had popped up on her other lower leg. By Wednesday morning, her legs looked clear, but she had a large spot on one of her upper arms. That night, a new spot popped up on one of her feet, but all of the others were gone. Now, she's completely clear. Who knows??

Crazy, huh?
